if COM is really missing, XP might find it on the XP install CD. The virtualbox-additions are drivers that XP (and others) needs to run correctly in virtualbox. Between the two, you might be able to repair XP. Also, emerge app-emulation/virtualbox-additions, which will give another iso to mount as a virtual CD-ROM drive. Is that an application error or does XP fail to launch? Try putting an iso of your XP install disk as a virtual CD drive. No, the machine is not reboot yet - does this make sense if modules are reinserted? Yes, I temprorary renamed my ~/.VirtaulBox folder for test - that didn't help All the 5.x stuff is completely removed Hp pavilion hpe h8-1260t/2AB5 spinning rust x3Īmd64/17.1/desktop (stable), OpenRC, -systemd -pulseaudio I was able to move my virtual machines to a 64 bit system. (Same problem you are having with python_compat problem.) On the other hand, on my 32 bit machines, it looks like VirtualBox is end of the line. If your running 64 bit, at last amd64, the transition from 5.4.~ to 6.1.~ should be seamless and it was for me. If yes, I think VirtualBox is toast. Most likely, the VirtualBox server is not running or failed to start. OKay, I'll give it a try and will report back if I hit any troubles.Ħ.1.18 compiled and installed successfully including modules, new modules are loaded, my user is in vboxusers group, but when I run VirtualBox i get:įailed to initialize COM or to find the VirtualBox COM server. Questions are guaranteed in life Answers aren't. I use virtualbox-6.1.8 at work for my virtual WinXp, Win7, win8 and Win10, but unlike you I always updated from portage the latest stable virtualbox version. Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get 6? Yes, I confirm that Virtualbox (not bin) 6.1.18 compiles, installs and runs Win VMs beginning from XP.Ĭonsidering a significant version change, I'd recommend you to backup all your VMs before the upgrade. Last edited by cz0 on Mon 11:18 am edited 1 time in total Can someone confirm it is safe to build 6.1.18 and it will run old VMs, please? I've heard the virtualbox-6 fails to compile and run, but some folks managed to run it. Since I have no chance to return to old version after unemerging it and this is one way ticket, I'm worried about current stable version. It looks like there is no way to stay with the virtualbox-bin-5.2.40 and I'm forced to build virtualbox-6.1.18 from sources (that I don't want to do, but no precompiled version provided anymore). Finally, hitting the 'No supported implementation in PYTHON_COMPAT' error with a dependency conflict on dev-lang/python-exec. When virtualbox-bin was pushed out from the repo, I've simply dig out virtualbox-bin-5.08 from the git and let it sit along in my local repo keep rebuilding it for a long period of time now. I use VirtualBox occasionally for some old windows electronics CAD software and my most active VMs are at least 7 y.o. Posted: Fri 11:58 am Post subject: Is virtualbox-6.1.18 safe to update?
